ADSORPTION OF ATRAZINE BY BIOCHARS PRODUCED FROM BYPRODUCTS OF THE WOOD INDUSTRY REA
Fruehwirth,Marcelo; Sbizzaro,Mariana; Rosa,Danielle M.; Sampaio,Silvio C.; Reis,Ralpho R. dos.
ABSTRACT Atrazine is a herbicide widely used in agriculture; however, because of its toxicity, alternatives are needed to remove this compound from the environment. In this study, we investigated the adsorption process and the atrazine-adsorbing ability of three biochars produced at different pyrolysis temperatures from byproducts of the wood industry. The biochars were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and their physical characteristics were evaluated by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The biochar pyrolyzed at 350 °C (BM350) adsorbed 26.04% of the herbicide, showing the best performance among the three biochars tested, even though it had the lowest specific surface area (1.467 m2...

Seasonal assessment of water quality was undertaken in an agricultural cattle-raising and trout-breeding region. Seventeen sites were sampled in ten municipalities close to the Papagaio and Ibitipoca State Parks in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Landsat 5 satellite images and Spotmap mosaic images with resolution of 2.5 m were employed to correlate classes of land use and topographic characteristics with the environmental contamination index of the water bodies at these sites. Results show a change in hydric classification of three sites evaluated. During the rainy season, sites 3, 7 and 17 were classified as class 3 according to CONAMA regulations, whereas the other sites were classified as class 2. During the dry season, sites 10 and 11 belonged to class 3 and...

Effect of potassium on the leaching of chemical species in a soil treated with sewage sludge BABT
Paglia,Edmilson Cezar; Serrat,Beatriz Monte; Freire,Clarice Azevedo de Luna; Sirtoli,Ana Rosa dos Anjos; Veiga,Andrea Mayer.
The objective of this research was to evaluate the potassium interference, used as supplementary fertilization, in the ions leaching, in a soil that was treated with alkalinized sewage sludge and cultivated, with maize. The experimental set with sewage sludge results showed an increase of the potassium concentration and chloride concentration in the leached solution, as well as the reduction of the Al3+ concentration, as the doses of potassium fertilizer applied to the soil were increased, for the four leachings. The presence of sewage sludge treated with lime increased the concentration of NO3 -, Cl-, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Al3+ in the solutions in the majority of leachings. Values of Al3+ were higher than 0.1 mg L-1, than in all leachings when sewage sludge was...

Environmental risk increase due to heavy metal contamination caused by a copper mining activity in Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
BIDONE,EDISON D.; LAYBAUER,LUCIANO; CASTILHOS,ZULEICA C.; MADDOCK,JOHN L..
The Camaquã Copper Mines (CCM) were the main sulphide deposit in Southern Brazil and have been in operation from last century to 1996. To evaluate water contamination and environmental risk increase by heavy metals from mining operations, two points on the João Dias Creek were sampled (Station 1, background area and Station 2, contaminated area). Mining activity increased the natural weakly heavy metal fluxes by approximately 5424 kg. ( ~ 60%) of the total metal flux, 1542 kg. ( ~ 49%) of dissolved and 3881 kg ( ~ 66%) of particulate metal flux. Total metal flux of anthropic origin was mostly due to Fe followed by Cu > Zn > Mn whereas Cd, As and Pb fluxes were negligible. The potential human health hazards and risk assessment related to daily intake...

Influence of land use/occupation on water quality in the Trussu river valley, Ceará, Brazil Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Neto,José Ribeiro de Araújo; Andrade,Eunice Maia de; Palácio,Helba Araújo de Queiroz; Sales,Maria Monaliza de; Maia,Anthony Rafael Soares.
ABSTRACT The growing pressure on water resources has reduced its availability as regards quality. Data was investigated for two different periods, with the aim of evaluating the influence of the use and occupation of space on the temporal dynamics of the quality of surface and groundwater in the perennialised valley of the Trussu River in the State of Ceará, Brazil. The first period was from September 2002 to February 2004 and the second from April 2013 to April 2014. Twenty-two water samples were taken from nine sampling stations, five on the surface and four underground. The same stations were considered, monitoring 12 attributes of water quality for a total of 2,376 analyses. Temporal dynamics were characterised employing a technique of multivariate...

Nitrate and ammonium in soil solution in tobacco management systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Kaiser,Douglas Rodrigo; Reinert,Dalvan José; Reichert,José Miguel; Streck,Carlos Arnoldo; Pellegrini,André.
Tobacco farmers of southern Brazil use high levels of fertilizers, without considering soil and environmental attributes, posing great risk to water resources degradation. The objective of this study was to monitor nitrate and ammonium concentrations in the soil solution of an Entisol in and below the root zone of tobacco under conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT) and no-tillage (NT). The study was conducted in the small-watershed Arroio Lino, in Agudo, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A base fertilization of 850 kg ha-1 of 10-18-24 and topdressing of 400 kg ha-1 of 14-0-14 NPK fertilizer were applied. The soil solution was sampled during the crop cycle with a tension lysimeter equipped with a porous ceramic cup. Ammonium and nitrate...

Vermicompost and biochar substrates can reduce nutrients leachates on containerized ornamental plant production Horticultura Brasileira
Alvarez,José M; Pasian,Claudio; Lal,Rattan; López,Rafael; Fernández,Manuel.
ABSTRACT Containerized ornamental plant production is facing several environmental challenges. One of them is to replace the widely used, but with questionable sustainability, peat based substrates and another is to avoid water contamination by chemicals leaching from the nursery. Therefore, as have been verified that petunia and pelargonium plants can be produced in peat-based growing media partially replaced by vermicompost (V) and biochar (B) without decreasing commercial quality, this study has focused on analyzing the leachate from a standard peat-based substrate as a control, used for producing these two ornamental species, and those from the same substrate to which different proportions in volume of V (10% and 20%) and B (4% and 12%) have been...
